La vis sans fin OTT se compose d'une vis arbrée et d'une vis creuse (fixé sur la vis arbrée). Les dents des vis présentent présentent un profil à variation positive de l'addendum extrêment important, tout en facilitant le dégagement des dentures. La vis arbrée entraîne la roue dans un  sens, alors que la vis creuse tournera en sens inverse. Une demie vis assure la fonction d’entraînement, l’autre demie vis absorbera les effets de l'inversion, (retour de la course dû au changement de sens de rotation,) ce qui est primordial pour les applications ou les changements de directions sont fréquents, comme pour les applications en machines outils.  roue et vis sans jeu.
